Epcor will be removing invasive species from the South Terwillegar storm ponds starting this week. Work at South Terwillegar Pond V, located between Speaker Way NW and Sandin Cove NW, will start Tuesday, according to a notice posted at the fenced-off pond on Monday. Epcor says Prussian carp and goldfish are among the invasive species that have been found in the community’s ponds. “These invasive species threaten our natural ecosystems because they adapt quickly and can establish large populations that compete with native fish for food and habitat, prey on their eggs, and disrupt the natural balance of waterways such as the North Saskatchewan River,” a spokesperson told CTV News Edmonton. The ponds will be treated with the Alberta government-approved rotenone, a compound derived from the roots of a tropical plant from the bean family. It only affects gilled species. Ponds II and III will be treated next week when weather is favourable. All of the ponds will be treated a second time in about three weeks. Epcor says the work is part of an annual program it follows for city-owned facilities and a legislative requirement.
