After a hot and sunny Tuesday, we’re back to some clouds and a chance of showers/thunderstorms for the next few days. Northeastern Alberta is already seeing thunderstorms this morning and we have some showers west of Edmonton that could push into the city by late-morning or midday. The primary severe thunderstorm risk looks like it’ll be in east-central Alberta late this afternoon/early this evening. Isolated severe storms could produce large hail, damaging gusts and downpours. There’s also a slight tornado risk. As always, MOST areas won’t get severe weather, but it’s impossible at this point to pin down exactly where those storms will develop so keep an eye on weather alerts throughout today. We also have the potential for some thunderstorms in the Edmonton/Red Deer areas and the possibility for some isolated severe storms (although, the severe risk is low). There are some limiting factors to the severe potential in the Edmonton areas. It looks like we have some high-level wildfire smoke that has drifted into the Edmonton region early this morning. AND...if we DO get some showers or thundershowers by midday, both of those factors should minimize the threat of severe storms. That doesn’t mean the risk is zero... but it’s lower than it would be if we were starting the day under sunny skies and building up some heat throughout the day. Bottom line for Edmonton and area: Cloudy and hazy with a few sunny breaks early, possibly showers late-morning/midday. Then... a chance for some isolated thunderstorms in the area late this afternoon/early this evening. Temperatures will hit the low to mid 20s depending on whether or not those early-day showers hit the city or fizzle out before getting here. The modelling for Thursday/Friday has taken a bit of a turn on precip timing. Instead of late-day showers/thunderstorms... we’re now looking at a chance of some showers or periods of rain in the morning/midday for both days. Temperatures will top out in the low 20s. We’ll see a bit of a warming trend through the weekend with afternoon highs in the low to mid 20s Saturday/Sunday and a chance of a late-day shower or thunderstorm on Saturday.
