We’re on the doorstep of a snowy and chilly Thanksgiving long weekend. The snow will be done by late Saturday, but the cool air will stick around until Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. Temperatures will hover just slightly above 0 and with some gusty wind, it’ll FEEL more like the -5 range Saturday. Calmer conditions, but still cloudy for Sunday with a high near 5 degrees. Some sunshine Monday and an afternoon high in the 8 to 10 degree range. Now that that’s out of the way - let’s get into the precipitation outlook. In western AB, rain will transition to snow Friday afternoon. Snowfall WARNINGs are in effect for areas from Grande Prairie and Swan Hills south through Grande Cache/Hinton/Edson and Jasper/Nordegg. Much of that region will see 5 to 10 cm of snow, but some spots will get 10 to 20 cm by late Saturday. A “Special Weather Statement” detailing the first snowfall of the season is in place for the areas in grey on that map. For areas near Edmonton and east, the rain will flip over to snow Friday night or early Saturday morning. Lesser amounts are expected, but 2 to 5 cm of accumulation is possible across most of central and eastern Alberta. Gusty wind is also on tap for Friday evening and Saturday. Anyone doing any highway travel late Friday/Saturday should check road conditions before heading out. Prepare for the possibility of reduced visibility in blowing snow (although, once the snow hits the ground...we shouldn’t get much drifting because it’ll be wet.)
