The Edmonton Public Library (EPL) has released a new album for parents and children. Sing it, Edmonton: Songs from the Neighbourhood is a compilation featuring 20 original songs by 25 musicians, songwriters and performers from across the Edmonton region, Treaty 6 Territory and the Métis Nation of Alberta. It was recorded at the Stanley A. Milner Library’s Makerspace recording studios. The album was created as part of EPL’s “Welcome Baby” program, which encourages literacy from birth. “Literacy doesn’t begin with letters,” Pilar Martinez of EPL said in a news release. “Ninety per cent of a child’s brain develops before the age of five. Engaging with music early on helps children build essential skills and sets them up for future success in school—and in life. We’re incredibly proud to share this album as a gift to families, caregivers, and most importantly, our youngest community members.” EPL accepted submissions from artists who wanted to participate in the album. A dedicated jury from EPL’s Early Literacy and Family Services team curated the final tracklist based on its musical quality, educational value, and connection to Edmonton’s communities.
