It’s setting up to be a very active day for thunderstorms (possibly severe) in central and north-central Alberta. That risk zone stretches from Edmonton south to Red Deer and then east in the Wainwright north to Cold Lake regions. As always, not everyone in that risk zone will get severe weather, but keep an eye on the situation this afternoon for any weather alerts that get issued. Today’s setup is a bit different from the typical “late afternoon/early evening risk” as thunderstorms may start bubbling up in the Edmonton/Red Deer areas midday or early this afternoon. There’s still the potential for some showers/thunderstorms early in the evening, but the best chance will be early this afternoon. The weekend outlook continues to be a head scratcher... Much of the modelling indicates a high probability of scattered showers and thunderstorms in central and north-central Alberta Saturday afternoon, Saturday night and Sunday, with northern Alberta getting showers/rain Saturday night and Sunday. However, the Canadian models have dropped most of that precipitation right out. Is it possible that we get through the weekend without any showers in Edmonton? Yes. Is it likely? I don’t think so. The daytime hours on Saturday should be sunny/partly cloudy around Edmonton. I’m keeping a 40-per cent chance of some evening showers/thunderstorms in my forecast for Saturday. I’m also going with mostly cloudy skies and a 40-per cent chance of showers (especially in the morning) on Sunday. Regardless of the precipitation, temperatures probably won’t warm up or cool down much from what we’ve seen the past few days. Afternoon high should be in the 16 to 19 C range both days.
