A roofing contractor has been fined $200,000 nearly three years after a worker fell to his death through the roof of a building on Refinery Row immediately east of Edmonton. An Edmonton Court of Justice judge imposed the fine on Albatross Roofing after the company pleaded guilty to one count of failing to ensure the health and safety of a worker under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, the Alberta government said in a media release Monday. All other charges were withdrawn. The worker died after falling through the roof of a building near 37 Street and 101 Avenue on Dec. 11, 2023. At the time, Imperial Oil said it was leasing the building to a third party and that it was not part of the company’s Strathcona refinery operations. A second contractor was fined earlier this year in the death. Arbutus Landscaping pleaded guilty on Aug. 19 for failing to establish a system or process to ensure compliance with OHS laws. The Calgary-based firm was fined $38,000 by the same court, with all remaining charges withdrawn.
