The City of Edmonton Reuse Centre was home to vendors dedicated to reducing environmental impact ahead of Earth Day on Saturday. The Earth Day Expo highlighted sustainable products made from reused materials that Edmontonians were able to peruse while learning more about avoiding single-use items. The Reuse Centre is a city service that takes donations of canning jars, egg cartons, packing material and more in order to divert household waste from landfills. “Then those items are recirculated amongst the community to those who need them for specific purposes,” said Liane Little, the centre’s education specialist. “School teachers might need items for counting activities, or daycares might need drawing paper. Since 2007, the centre says it’s helped recirculate more than 2,800 tonnes of material back into the community. “Any small actions end up making a huge impact,” Little added. With school almost out for the summer, the centre is looking forward to donations of used school supplies like pencil crayons or paper.
