Officials ask residents to conserve water after heavy downpour in Edmonton area

EDMONTON — Heavy rains and localized flooding in and around the city of Edmonton have officials asking residents to conserve water as their systems reach capacity.

A water supply alert from the city says flooding and sewer backups have been reported in neighbouring areas.

It says there could be more problems if its stormwater system continues to operate over capacity.

Similar warnings are in place for nearby cities and towns such as St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Beaumont and Tofield.

Utilities provider Epcor says on social media that customers should defer showering as well as running washing machines and dishwashers, and should cut back on toilet flushes.

Environment Canada says up to 110 millimetres of rain fell in the area as of early Sunday evening, and another 40 millimetres is expected before tapering off Monday.
