A $2.9 billion gas pipeline broke ground east of Edmonton on Tuesday. The Yellowhead Mainline will be 235 kilometres long and run between the Peers and Fort Saskatchewan areas, carrying one billion cubic feet of natural gas daily to Dow Chemical’s Path2Zero facility and other regional customers, including residential. The project was announced in 2024 and, according to the Government of Alberta’s major projects website, is expected to be operational by the end of 2027. The province says construction of the pipeline is estimated to create 2,000 direct jobs. “By strengthening our natural gas infrastructure, we are creating the conditions for greater industrial development, increased economic activity and a more competitive economy,” Premier Danielle Smith said in a media release. “This project alone will enable about $20 billion of investments in Alberta, including the DOW Fort Saskatchewan Path2Zero project.” The project was proposed by Canadian Utilities Ltd., owned by ATCO Ltd. ATCO said the pipeline adds capacity to Alberta’s natural gas system and is expected to indirectly create thousands more jobs related to downstream economic growth. More information about the pipeline can be found on ATCO’s website.
