Forty new police officers who will serve in Edmonton, Camrose and Lacombe officially graduated Friday at Edmonton City Hall. Among them was Maria Djukic. The former restaurant server and professional mixed martial artist said her experiences connecting with and becoming part of different communities inspired her to apply to the Edmonton Police Service. “Instead of training and fighting for a belt that doesn’t really care about how or what you do, serving people no matter what the situation is feels more fulfilling, more rewarding,” Djukic, who was born and raised in Edmonton, told CTV News Edmonton. The Edmonton Police Service, which has more than 3,000 employees, has recently held several graduation ceremonies each year as it continues to add new officers.
