Police are reminding Edmontonians to lock their vehicles as they see an increase in break-ins over the past 30 days. A total of 126 vehicle break-ins have been reported to the Edmonton Police Service’s west and downtown branches. Theft under $5,000 from vehicles increased by 17 per cent in 2025, EPS said. Some victims also experienced fraud after their wallets were stolen. “Many vehicle break-ins are crimes of opportunity,” Staff Sgt. Sean Parker said. “Taking a few moments to secure your vehicle and remove valuables can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim.” Police are encouraging people to secure their vehicles and personal belongings, including never leaving wallets, purses or IDs unattended, and parking in well-lit locations when possible. EPS also said licence plate thefts are common and recommends anti-theft bolts to secure them, which are free at any police station.
