Alberta’s police watchdog said officers spent half an hour trying to negotiate the surrender of a man who was later shot and killed by officers. The 57-year-old man was shot and killed by police at the Hilton Garden Inn in West Edmonton on Aug. 24. Police responded to the Hilton Garden Inn at 17610 Stony Plain Rd. at 7:14 p.m. after a report that two men inside a hotel room had a gun. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said officers arrived to find the man holding a pair of scissors in the second-floor hallway. ASIRT said officers tried for 30 minutes to get the man to surrender while hotel guests sheltered in place. “Officers then used a conducted energy weapon and less-lethal rounds, but they didn’t succeed in getting him to surrender,” a media release from ASIRT said on Friday. “The man dropped the scissors, but while police were continuing negotiations, he picked them up and advanced toward officers.” Two officers shot the 57-year-old man, who was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. No officers or other emergency workers were injured. ASIRT is tasked with investigating any police incident involving serious injury or death. It said Friday the investigation was ongoing.
