Temperatures managed to sneak up to 22 C (very briefly) in Edmonton on Thursday. There was just enough sun that broke through the cloud midday to boost the mercury past 20, but we were in the mid to high teens for most of the day. A similar temperature pattern is in place for today with more cloud than sun, but the chance of some sunny breaks should push us to around 20 C for a high. That said, most of the afternoon will be in the mid-to-upper teens. Heavier rain continues to fall in parts of west and northwestern Alberta. Reports indicate 50+ mm in parts of the Hinton/Grande Cache regions with another 10-20 mm likely by Friday night (bringing the total close to 80 mm). A rainfall warning remains in effect for those areas and that warning stretches as far north as Grande Prairie, although it looks like Grande Prairie will be closer to 50 mm total. We’re also getting some showers north of Fort McMurray early Friday morning as the precipitaiton is all developing on the north and west edges of a low-pressure system over central Alberta. In the Edmonton region, we should be mostly (if not completely) dry through this morning and early afternoon. There’s a chance of some scattered showers (possibly a thunderstorm) in the area late this afternoon and tonight. Heavy, steady rain is not expected. Cooler air settles in for Saturday. Edmonton should be overcast and around 15 or 16 C for a high Saturday afternoon. Further north, skies will clear and there’s a risk of some patchy frost Sunday morning in parts of northern Alberta. Cloudy with a few sunny breaks on Sunday in the Edmonton region and temperatures get bumped back up to the 20 C range ahead of another area of low pressure. That next system will bring rain to southern Alberta on Sunday and could push some showers into the Edmonton area as early as Sunday evening. Edmonton and area’s best bet for rain (possibly steady and heavy) will be through the day Monday and temperatures will slip back to a head in the mid teens for Labour Day.
