An Edmonton man accused of possessing what investigators described as “extreme” child sexual abuse material was before a justice on Tuesday. Jason Campbell was charged in late 2023 with possessing, distributing and accessing child exploitation material. ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation unit began investigating after receiving information from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children. Campbell’s lawyer filed two pre-trial motions alleging charter right violations. The defence says one application involves the seizure of an IP address and the extent Canadian authorities went to obtain it. The Crown argues passing along information is not a search. The second is a Jordan application, which requires the accused be tried within a reasonable amount of time. The applications will be back before the court next month.
