Here’s what’s happening in and around Edmonton this Mother’s Day weekend. Mother’s Day events Beyond the classic dinner, dining or drinks, the warmer May weather means you could mark Mother’s Day on Sunday with any number of outdoor activities (picnic, anyone?). Here are a few ways to celebrate the day – or places to find last-minute gifts. Spring Métis Market: Kingsway Mall will host Métis artists on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Métis Art Walk and Market is put on by the Edmonton Arts Council. Creekside Greenhouse: A garden party and plant sale at the Zebra Centre on 112 Avenue will feature treats from the Mini Donut King and Chief Daddy’s Indigenous Cuisine. Proceeds support the Zebra Child and Youth Advocacy Centre. Oddbird Art and Craft fair: In the heart of Old Strathcona from Friday to Sunday at the performing arts centre, where artists and designers will be selling their pieces. Balay Coffee will be offering drinks, sweet treats and sandwiches at the fair. Pioneer House: This Fort Saskatchewan staple is offering a Mother’s Day market on Saturday. The event features handmade goods, jewelry, home decor and treats. Safety awareness in the park Maybe your mom is super into emergency preparedness. There’s an event for that too. Everyone is welcome at Get Ready in the Park, the city’s outdoor event meant to connect Edmontonians with nearly 50 emergency response agencies in recognition of Canada’s emergency preparedness week. The event runs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Edmonton Expo Centre grounds on 118 Avenue. Attendees will learn how to keep loved ones and pets safe during emergencies as well as safety and prevention tips and tricks. Local food trucks will also be on site. Admission is free. Annual Ben Calf Robe Traditional Pow Wow A cherished Indigenous cultural gathering in Edmonton is back at the Commonwealth Community Recreation Centre on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. The 40-year-old annual celebration is meant to bring together Elders, Knowledge Keepers, dancers, drummers and families from across Treaty 6 territory. Admission is free. Sports No, it’s not hockey. But Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) team the Edmonton Stingers will host the Winnipeg Sea Bombers Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Edmonton Expo Centre. The CEBL runs until early August. Tickets begin at $27.
