It’s going to rain a lot this weekend…again. Here’s how the city and Epcor are preparing

The City of Edmonton is asking people to shorten their showers and defer their laundry ahead of another rainy weekend. Amanda Anderson has more.

This weekend is expected to be much like the last one with lots of rain on the forecast and the potential for more localized flooding and water use restrictions.

Edmonton has had around 200 mm of rain in June and is on pace to break the record set more than 100 years ago by the time the month ends.

Last weekend’s rainfall caused some localized flooding and prompted a call from Epcor to reduce unnecessary water use for about 24 hours.

Epcor says people can continue their normal use for now but encourages them to defer laundry or take shorter showers to ease pressure on stormwater systems. It also asks Edmontonians to stay out of stormwater ponds.

The company also recommends checking eavestroughs, downspouts and sunpumps.

Erosion across Edmonton

The east sidewalk on the High Level Bridge was closed on Thursday until further notice due to slope instability.

“This is actually a site that we’ve been monitoring for erosion … and with the measurements that we have and with the erosion that took place, we decided to close the sidewalk as a safety measure,” Pascale Ladouceur with the City of Edmonton said.

The city is tracking 60 sites as part of a landslide and erosion management program. They include the High Level Bridge, Mill Creek Ravine and Whitemud Creek.

“Right now we have over 20 sites that have been reported as having impacts,” Ladouceur said. “It can go from a crack in a trail, a washout or an erosion, like we’re seeing on the High Level Bridge, or concerns about just high water flow in some of our creeks, and so we’re definitely monitoring all of that and we’ll continue to do that over the weekend.”
