The Edmonton Valley Zoo is mourning the death of a “gentle” and much-loved critter who brought joy to staff and visitors for many years. The zoo announced on Thursday that Scarp the three-banded armadillo had died at 25 years old. Scarp was popular with staff and volunteers and often made public appearances at education programs, day camps and birthday parties. “Scarp lived a long and meaningful life, and he leaves behind many wonderful memories,” the zoo wrote in a social media post. “While saying goodbye is never easy, we are grateful for every day we were able to spend with him and for the special connection he shared with so many people. “We’ll miss seeing his curious face and watching him go about his day in true Scarp fashion. Our condolences go out to everyone who cared for and loved him.” According to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, three-banded armadillos and the only armadillos that can curl completely into a ball. The three-pound animals are found in parts of Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina and can live up to 30 years in captivity.
