A beloved south Edmonton bakery reopened under new ownership Tuesday, with the new proprietors giving away baked goods to mark their first day of operation. “We thought we’d just do our first day as a kind of community appreciation day,” Luke Wood told CTV News Edmonton at the Hazeldean Bakery, which he and his business partner bought nine months ago. “Everything’s on the house.” Lucy, who ran the bakery for 15 years before putting it up for sale in September last year, sold it to Wood just before Christmas. “We made a few changes, fixed it up a little bit and opened back up,” Wood said. The reopening drew a considerable response. Wood said a Facebook post announcing the soft opening and giveaway on Monday drew 200 responses within 20 minutes, and hundreds of people showed up Tuesday morning. “We have about 1,000 items, and we’re running out now, so it’s been successful,” he said. Longtime customer Tennille Mereniuk said she learned about the bakery’s reopening on Instagram. “It’s nice to have a community staple return,” she said.
