Field in Alberta licence plate design contest down to 4

The second round of voting for Alberta’s new licence plate is now live with just four plates left to choose between.

Thanks to 150,000 online voters, the field of choices for Alberta’s new licence plate has been narrowed from eight to four, said Dale Nally, the provincial government’s minister for Service Alberta and red-tape reduction.

Nally showed the final four designs to CTV News Edmonton on Wednesday outside his office in Morinville, 20 kilometres north of the city.

They are the standard red-on-white design that’s been in use since 1984, and ones featuring an Alberta flag and the Three Sisters mountain range, a cowboy and pumpjack, and Moraine Lake.

The new plates will sport a new slogan, ‘Strong and Free,’ which will replace ‘Wild Rose Country.’ Nally said last week the new slogan is taken from the province’s motto, the Latin Fortis et Liber, which directly translates to ‘strong and free.’

‘Strong and free’ has also been used by the governing United Conservative Party in promotional material, and is the name of its theme song..

Voting for the next round continues until Nov. 5. Nally said the province will announce the winning design in mid-November.
