The big weather story for tonight and Tuesday is the wind and snow combo. Wind should be relatively light for most of today (5-15 km/h) in Edmonton. But, it’ll start gusting this evening and it looks like it’ll stay gusty through the day Tuesday. Gusts are expected to be in the 50-60 km/h range tonight and 40-50 km/h through the day Tuesday. Further south and east, wind warnings are in effect for Red Deer/Drumheller/Coronation regions. Gusts could be in the 90 km/h range late tonight. As that wind is howling, we’ll have some snow dropping south through central and eastern Alberta tonight. That snow shouldn’t amount to much more than 1 to 3 cm in the Edmonton region and should move through late this evening and overnight. Blowing snow could be an issue on area highways. The wind will stick around through Tuesday, but the snow should be out of the Edmonton region by early Tuesday morning. Elsewhere, blowing snow will be an issue on area highways in central and eastern Alberta tonight and early Tuesday. Northeast Alberta also gets a second shot of snow during the day Tuesday. Again, it won’t amount to much...but blowing snow will be an issue. As for temperatures... Cooler air settled in on Sunday with afternoon temperatures around -7 C in Edmonton. That cool down is a sign of things to come, despite the fact that we’ll warm slightly today and Tuesday. Afternoon temps should get to the -3 to -5 C range in Edmonton today and we’ll hit a high in the 0 to -3 C range Tuesday. After that...temperatures tumble to close out the week. Wednesday will have a high in the -5 to -10 C range. Thursday-Saturday will have morning temperatures in the -18 to -25 C range. Afternoon highs for Thursday/Friday will be in the mid minus teens. East-central and northeast Alberta will likely get a few days with daytime highs in the -20s and mornings in the -30s later this week. There’s some uncertainty with temperatures for the weekend and beyond. Some of the modelling indicates temperatures starting to warm up through the weekend. MOST of the modelling indicates that warming will hold off until early next week. I’m going with daytime highs in the -8 to -14 C range for Saturday/Sunday...so...still on the cool side, but not as cold as Thursday/Friday. It’s possible we’re a lot closer to -5 C on those days; we’ll watch to see how it develops. Beyond the weekend...I’m fairly confident that we’ll see temperatures close to 0 C by early-to-mid next week. Here’s the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Mostly cloudy.
