An Edmonton man has been found guilty of manslaughter in the death of his five-week-old son. The baby was rushed from a home in west Edmonton to the Stollery Children’s Hospital with serious injuries on Feb. 5, 2023. He was removed from life support on Feb. 9, 2023. An autopsy was conducted the next day, but additional testing was required and the medical examiner wasn’t able to release a full report until Jan. 11, 2024. The baby’s biological father, George Russell Hulleman, was charged with second-degree murder days after the release of the report. On Thursday, a judge announced his decision in an Edmonton court room, noting Hulleman suffers from significant cognitive impairment and may not have been able to understand that his actions would result in the death of the baby. According to the judge’s decision, the baby suffered serious injuries, including bleeding and swelling of the brain, torn nerves, and fractured limbs and ribs. The injuries happened while Hulleman was alone with his son, while his spouse, the baby’s mother, slept in her room. Hulleman told police the baby had rolled off a couch. One of the doctors that examined the baby said he would have had to have fallen from four or five storeys to cause the injuries he suffered. Sentencing has been set for Sept. 18.
