An Alberta-based landscaping company has pleaded guilty to its involvement in the death of a worker at an Edmonton construction site in 2023. The worker died on Dec. 11 that year after falling through a roof. Arbutus Landscaping was charged in connection with the death. The company ultimately pleaded guilty to one count for “failing to establish a system or process to ensure compliance with OHS (Occupational Health and Safety) laws.” An Edmonton court fined Arbutus $318,000, which included the victim surcharge. All other charges against the company were withdrawn. Albatross Roofing was charged with OHS offences related to the same death and will be sentenced in Edmonton on Sept. 10.
