The sponsor of a major women’s golf tournament held in Alberta’s capital that ended Sunday has announced what it calls a record donation to support heart health care. CPKC representatives presented a cheque for $4.4 million to Edmonton’s Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation on Sunday’s final day of action at the CPKC Canadian Women’s Open, held at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club. The railway company also donated $550,000 to the city’s Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation to go toward the CK Hui Heart Centre, according to a media release. The money raised for the Stollery foundation “will help support leading-edge equipment, research, training and programs for cardiac teams caring for some of the most complex pediatric heart patients in Canada,” while the funds for the Royal Alex’s heart centre are slated to “support continued innovation and excellence in cardiac care,” according to the release. The Canadian Women’s Open, the Calgary-headquartered CPKC’s “flagship fundraiser,” has helped raise more than $31 million for children’s cardiac research, care and equipment since 2014. Through its CPKC Has Heart campaign, the company says it has raised more than $78 million for heart-health initiatives. Japan’s Miyu Yamashita won the annual tournament by nine strokes while matching an LPGA Tour 72-hole scoring record with a 23-under 257 total.
