A new community hub is available for Muslim women and girls in Edmonton. • Get the latest Edmonton updates right to your inbox Amanah: A Safer Space for Muslim Women and Girls opened on 89 Street and 51 Avenue on Saturday. The new facility was organized by Sisters Dialogue, a grassroots community organization created after a string of attacks on Black muslim women in Edmonton in late 2020 and early 2021. “We needed a space for Muslim women to feel heard and to feel safe,” said Sisters Dialogue director Asha Yassin. “Having a space that is for Muslim women, by Muslim women, I think, is just a great opportunity for them to feel supported.” Yassin said a recent survey on Muslim women, done by Sisters Dialogue, found 89 per cent of respondents had experienced some form of abuse. Amanah will offer workshops, peer support groups and activities, as well as serve as a space for Muslim women and girls to connect and address the challenges they face. Yassin said programming is fully funded and child care is available. “We want to be able to break those barriers (preventing community members) from being able to access any of the supports that they may need,” she added.
