Happy Beer Street just got a bit happier Thursday after receiving an entertainment district designation from the city. The designation allows for people to walk freely with an alcoholic beverage in hand and makes it easier for businesses in the area to host events. “Our entertainment districts have proven to be amazing catalysts for cultural vibrancy and economic activity, and 78 Avenue feels like the perfect place to add some more energy to our city,” said Alisa Laliberte, the city’s branch manager of economic investment service, in a statement. The city has two entertainment districts already – one on Rice Howard Way and the other on 104 Street off of Jasper Avenue. “These districts are an easy way for the city to support our local businesses while creating opportunities for greater community connection,” said Laliberte. The new district is located on 78 Avenue between 99 Street and 100 Street. During designated events, the street will be closed to vehicle traffic. Food and alcohol from participating businesses, including Shiddy’s Distilling, Blind Enthusiasm Brewing Company, Bent Stick Brewing and Yeasty Boys Brewing, can be purchased and consumed within the district boundaries. “We’re exceptionally excited to have the opportunity to build the future of 78 Avenue as one of Edmonton’s official entertainment districts,” said Blind Enthusiasm owner Greg Zeschuk. “All of our small businesses on the street will be working together to build community and provide an environment for people to gather together.” Last week, representatives from the breweries and distilleries on Happy Beer Street brought their proposal to the city, which saw support from Mayor Andrew Knack. There are more than a dozen events now planned for the area throughout 2026, the first, a market, in May.
