After a 16 C day on Monday in Edmonton, a spring snowstorm is heading our way with most of that snow falling tonight and through the day Wednesday. There’s still some uncertainty with accumulation, but I think we’ll likely get 1-4 cm of snow overnight and another 1-4 cm Wednesday. Today, about 10 degrees cooler than Monday with some occasional showers and possibly some rain/snow mix. That precipitation should fully flip over to heavier wet snow tonight. This will be a broad band of snow stretching from Hinton/Grande Cache all the way to the the Cold Lake/Lloydminster areas and most of the snow tonight will be just north of Highway 16. It’s possible for between 5-15 cm of snow in most of that region. A snowfall warning is in effect for the Hinton/Grande Cache area with the potential for 20-30 cm. That band of snow will slowly slump south through the day Wednesday and should push out of the Edmonton region by Wednesday evening. Blowing snow could also be an issue in those areas with gusts expected to be in the 30-40 km/h range tonight and Wednesday. Because of how wet the snow is expected to be, it won’t be drifting on the ground. But, it’ll be blowing around while it’s falling. Anyone with travel plans should check conditions before heading out and possibly postpone any unnecessary travel. Temperatures are also expected to drop through the day Wednesday and Edmonton will be a few degrees below 0 C throughout most of the day. We’ll start off around the freezing mark and then drop to -2 or -3 C in the afternoon. Once we get done with Wednesday’s snowstorm, we’ll stay on the cool side through Thursday under cloudy skies in Edmonton. Heavier snow will continue into at least Thursday morning across southern Alberta. Temperatures start to rebound Friday and Edmonton should get back to the 10 to 15 C range for the coming weekend.
