9 mm rifle, 114 grams of fentanyl seized west of Edmonton in drug trafficking case: RCMP

Mounties west of Edmonton have seized a rifle, fentanyl, cocaine and a throwing star in a traffic stop-turned-drug-trafficking investigation late last month.

Two B.C. men were pulled over in Hinton last Thursday. The driver told RCMP he did not have a licence. Officers later learned he was under court conditions not to drive and arrested him for breach of conditions.

During a vehicle search, RCMP say they found a 9 mm hi-point rifle, a box of ammunition, 114 grams of fentanyl, 33.8 grams of methamphetamine, 88.6 grams of cocaine, almost $20,000 in cash and a throwing star.

Both the driver and passenger, who Mounties say were under a lifetime firearm and ammunition ban and are residents of Merritt, B.C., were charged with:

• three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking,
• possession of a prohibited firearm in a motor vehicle,
• possession of a prohibited weapon,
• two counts of possession of a firearm and/or ammunition while prohibited; and
• possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000

The two were brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody. They will appear in court this week.
