An arctic storm that slammed into Alberta Friday has cast near record low temperatures across the Prairies.

"Extreme wind chill values between -45 C and -50 C are expected across many parts of southern Manitoba tonight and Sunday," said a weather warning posted on the Environment Canada website Saturday.

There are similar warnings for Alberta and Saskatchewan.

On Saturday evening, Calgary, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Saskatoon were all experiencing temperatures below -20 C.

According to Environment Canada, the temperatures in Calgary should be -1 C at this time of year.

The freezing temperatures have put pressure on the city's homeless shelters to accommodate everyone.

Calgary Drop-In Centre spokesperson, Wayne Mathieson, said no one was turned away Friday night.

"If it's cold, we put as many people as we can get in, even if they are under some restriction, we let them in anyways," he said. "Every nook and cranny we're putting people in because of the weather."

Calgary's Olympic Park cancelled all its outdoor activities Saturday, for fear participants could suffer frostbite.

Even the West Coast is suffering as Vancouver had snow on Friday. On the other side of the country, St. John's, N.L. was a tropical 11 C degrees on Saturday.
