CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez said Thursday that he completed chemotherapy, expressing optimism the treatment was successful and vowing to continue steering Venezuela toward socialism.

Chavez said he finished his fourth and final round of chemotherapy on Wednesday, calling the treatment "successful." Afterwards, Chavez said he underwent a series of medical tests and discussed current affairs with Cuba's former leader, Fidel Castro.

"I feel like I've been born again," Chavez said, speaking at Simon Bolivar International Airport shortly after returning to Venezuela from Cuba.

Chavez, a self-described "revolutionary" who underwent surgery in Cuba in June to remove a tumour from his pelvic region, says tests have shown no signs of a recurrence.

"Now we are going to be dedicated to the recuperation of the entire physical aspect," Chavez said.

The leftist leader said he plans to continue governing Venezuela after winning next year's presidential election, which is scheduled for Oct. 7.
