MONTREAL - Quebec Premier Jean Charest is headed to Asia this week to drum up interest in developing his province's natural resources.

Charest will visit Japan and China between Aug. 24 and Aug. 27 to meet with politicians and business leaders.

The premier has already made trips to Europe and New York this summer to promote his government's new plan for northern Quebec.

The plan -- known officially as the Plan Nord -- centres around the mining and energy sectors.

But the trade mission to Asia will also focus on some of Quebec's other top sectors, such aerospace and information technology.

Charest has estimated the Plan Nord could lead to $80 billion in public and private investment over the next 25 years.

The premier announced the plan in May and political observers say it's part of an attempt to build his political legacy.
