A Canadian flag, dozens of bouquets and a lone pink balloon mark a makeshift memorial in Truro, Nova Scotia for Catherine Campbell, the beloved officer who was murdered earlier this week in Halifax.

Campbell’s lifeless body was found just after midnight Wednesday, near an overpass in Halifax. Police later arrested suspect Christopher Garnier, 27, and charged him with second-degree murder in connection with Campbell’s death.

Campbell’s family held a private visitation in New Glasgow, N.S., on Sunday night. A public memorial is expected to draw a crowd of supporters in Campbell’s hometown of Stellarton on Monday.

The tight-knit community of Truro has come together to mourn the death of Campbell, who worked for the last six years in the small town. Hundreds of locals marched alongside first responders Saturday night to remember the fallen officer.

“We considered her one of our own,” said Truro Mayor Bill Mill. “She was the epitome of a role model.”

Garnier is due in court on September 30.
