A high-risk sex-offender who cut off his monitoring bracelet more than a week ago is no longer believed to be in the southern Alberta city of Lethbridge, but police say he remains at large.

Lethbridge Regional Police said Wednesday night that they are satisfied that Michael Sean Stanley is no longer in the community.

“Stanley currently poses no risk of harm to the local community, however until he is apprehended it is possible, but unlikely, that he could return,” police said in a statement. “Residents are asked to be aware.”

The RCMP has been looking for Stanley since Oct. 1, when vanished from Edmonton. His electronic monitoring bracelet was later found in Lloydminster, located on the Alberta-Saskatchewan border.

Police confirmed that Stanley, 48, fled to Lethbridge, where he contacted family in the area.

Police said Stanley’s relatives contacted authorities and urged him to give himself up.

According to police, Stanley has victimized people of various ages, including children who were taken from playgrounds and seniors.

He was released from prison in 2011 after serving a 32-month sentence for assault and forcible confinement. He is on Alberta’s high-risk offenders list.

On Monday, police said they seized Stanley’s purple Chevrolet Blazer from a west-end Lethbridge home.
