TORONTO -- Two children are in hospital with serious injuries after a car crashed into them while they were out trick-or-treating in Toronto Monday night.

Const. Clint Stibbe says the driver of a Honda CRV was speeding along Lawrence Ave. E. around 8:30 p.m. when it struck the back of a Hyundai, which in turn struck a third car.

He says the Honda then veered onto the grassy area where it barrelled into three 13-year-old children, leaving two seriously hurt and Halloween candy strewn about.

Paramedics transported a boy and girl -- twins -- on an emergency run to hospital.

Stibbe says the children are expected to survive.

A 44-year-old man who was allegedly driving the Honda has been charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

The driver of the Hyundai was charged with driving with a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit.
