MONTREAL - Three firefighters were taken to hospital to be treated for smoke after battling a fire late Tuesday in a residential building in northeast Montreal.

The blaze broke out at about 10:30 p.m. in the basement of a duplex in the city's Anjou district.

The flames ran though the first and second floors of the building before reaching the roof, causing it to partially collapse.

Eleven people were evacuated, including some from duplexes on either side of the burning building.

Some were taken in by the Red Cross, others spent the night with family.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire, which is being investigated by both fire and police officials.
