Supreme Court Justice Clement Gascon has been found safe and sound after being reported missing earlier in the day, Ottawa police say.

Gascon, 59, had been missing for several hours Wednesday after last being seen heading southwest along Wellington Street in Ottawa.

Just after 9 p.m., police issued a tweet indicated Gascon had been found safe. Police have not released any further details.

Last month, Gascon announced he would be stepping down from the Supreme Court, citing family and personal reasons. He has served on the country’s highest court for five years.

Before then-prime minister Stephen Harper named him to the Supreme Court in 2014, Gascon had been a judge on the Quebec Court of Appeal.
