A U-Haul truck stolen in Surrey, B.C. earlier this week has been recovered. But almost everything inside that belonged to a father and daughter moving west from Saskatoon is gone.
Michael Suiker and his daughter Meghan were on their way to a new life in Victoria, B.C. earlier this week and stopped in Surrey to visit family. They parked the truck and an attached trailer on a quiet street overnight Tuesday.
But when they came out the next morning, the truck and trailer were gone. Everything they owned except a couple of suitcases was gone, including all their furniture, electronics, family photographs, and urns filled with the ashes of loved ones.
Suiker’s girlfriend took to Facebook to ask for public help in finding the truck. That post has been shared more than 5,500 times.
On Friday, the moving van was found abandoned in a parking lot in Abbotsford. A local citizen had called police after recognizing the truck from reports on social media.
When the Suikers arrived, there wasn’t much left.
"The truck was gutted,” Michael Suiker told CTV Vancouver.
It appears the thieves broke the lock and took almost everything inside. All they left behind were three small boxes.
Fortunately, those boxes contain some precious family mementos, including photo albums and urns with the ashes of Suiker's father and grandmother.
The trailer with an ATV inside is still missing.
Forensic investigators with the Abbotsford Police will now try to get fingerprints from the truck, hoping to find a lead.
