Two police officers have been released from hospital after a shooting and stabbing incident that left a 30-year-old man dead in Mississauga, Ont. Friday.

Both officers were taken to hospital with serious knife wounds on Friday night and released Saturday, a spokesman for the Peel Regional Police Association union said.

The union added that one of the officers was shot during the incident, but was wearing a bullet proof vest that stopped the bullet.

The incident happened at an apartment building on Queen Frederica Drive, near Dixie Road and Dundas Street East, at about 10:40 p.m. on Friday, the province’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), said in a statement.

Rachel Firlott, who lives nearby, said she looked out of her window after hearing screaming and what sounded like gunshots.

“I saw the guy on the ground,” Firlott told CTV Toronto. “And then I saw an officer fall to the ground.”

The SIU’s statement said they are investigating the “interaction,” during which a 30-year-old man was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene.

An unidentified civilian also suffered non-life threatening injuries during the incident, but the SIU said it is not investigating those injuries.

Five investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned by the SIU to probe the circumstances of the incident.

A witness named Sandra, who declined to give her last name, said she saw people being arrested and loaded into ambulances after the incident.

"When I first came outside, the residents were telling me they heard gunshots," she said. "It was scary at first when I first came out until I found out what was really going on, then I kind of relaxed a bit."

Sandra said she saw a woman taken into police custody and put into a police cruiser. She said the woman was later transferred to an ambulance.

"I guess something was wrong with her and she went into the ambulance. Then we saw another young girl put into ambulance, she just had a mask on her, she didn't look seriously hurt but they end up taking her away."

Area resident Brenda Bilow said she has felt unsafe in the neighbourhood in the past.

“It’s very surprising that this happened, but at the same time I think it was going to happen at some time,” Bilow said.

Peel Regional Police Const. George Tudos said at least 40 officers responded to the incident Friday night.

Police said there are no outstanding suspects in connection with the incident.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
