MEADOW LAKE, Sask. -- Charges have been laid against a man in Saskatchewan in a case that almost led police to issue an Amber Alert.

RCMP began searching for the man Sunday after they were called about a serious assault on a woman at a home in Meadow Lake, where they say the suspect went to another home in the community and allegedly took a three-year-old girl.

Investigators immediately determined an Amber Alert would be necessary, but officers soon spotted a vehicle south of Meadow Lake that matched one they believed the suspect was driving, and the alert wasn't issued.

A 36-year-old man was arrested without incident and the unharmed girl was reunited with family.

Police now say the man faces charges that include aggravated sexual assault, assault with a weapon, breaking and entering and uttering threats.

The name of the suspect has not been released, as the Crown has requested a publication ban to protect the identity of the alleged victim.

The suspect is to make his next court appearance May 13 in Meadow Lake.
