Police have identified the woman whose torso was found in a garbage bin in Kitchener, Ont., over the weekend.
The torso of Kelsey Louise Felker, 24, was found in a large garbage bin behind an apartment building in the north end of the city on Saturday, police said in a statement Tuesday.
Police have not released an image of the victim and have not said if other body parts have been found.
No arrests have been made in the ongoing homicide investigation.
“This is a tragedy for the community, for the family especially and the efforts will continue, of course, to recover her body and provide some measure of closure for the family,” Insp. Kevin Thaler told CTV Kitchener.
Over the weekend, police confirmed that the torso was found with a black T-shirt with the words “Forget princess, I want to be a vampire” printed on the front.
Olaf Heinzel, Waterloo Regional Police public affairs co-ordinator, said information from the public about the T-shirt played a critical part in helping to identify the victim.
According to Heinzel, Felker did not live in the building where the torso was found and police don’t believe she had been reported missing.
A cause of death has not yet been determined, however an autopsy is continuing at a hospital in Hamilton, Heinzel said.
A police command post remains at the scene where the torso was found at 250 Frederick St.
Over the weekend, neighbours said they were disturbed by the grisly discovery.
A resident of the apartment building where the torso was found said more than half of the people who live there are retired.
“It’s a quiet building,” Matt Deoniziak said.
