Police in Guelph, Ont. say they've arrested and charged a 21-year-old man in connection with a hit-and-run that left one woman dead.
According to a police press release, the suspect was allegedly driving a stolen 2007 Ford Escape just after 2:30 a.m. on Sunday when he collided with 24-year-old Grace Glofcheskie.
Glofcheskie, who had recently studied at the University of Guelph, was walking north on Woolwich Street, near Edwin Street, when she was hit.
She was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but later declared dead.
Police allege the suspect was trying to evade a police RIDE checkpoint when he hit Glofcheskie, and say he also hit a hydro pole that night and caused the car to roll over.
Officers believe the man then fled on foot.
Police found and arrested him in a motel in the city on Tuesday, at approximately 10:20 a.m.
He now faces six charges:
- Break, Enter and Theft
- Possession of Property Obtained By Crime Over $5000
- Criminal Negligence Causing Death
- Dangerous Driving Causing Death
- Flight from Police Causing Death
- Breach of Probation
Police have not released the name of the suspect.
In a press release issued Tuesday, police thanked the community for helping locate the man, and said the investigation is ongoing.
The Ontario Special Investigations Unit is also investigating and looking into how police officers behaved during the events. The SIU conducts criminal investigations into incidents involving police and civilians, when serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault have occurred.
