Ottawa police have issued a Canada-wide warrant for an 18-year-old man wanted in connection with a prom night murder.

Police say Devontay Hackett is wanted in connection with the death of Brandon Volpi, 18, who was stabbed to death outside an Ottawa hotel following his prom.

Volpi was stabbed in the chest and neck when a fight broke out outside Les Suites Hotel during an after-party early Saturday morning. He was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries.

Investigators said they're unsure whether Hackett is in Ottawa, or whether he has fled the city.

"We don't have any information as to exactly where he is, but we don't have any information to say he's outside of Ottawa," Const. Marc Soucy told CTV Ottawa on Tuesday. "We still believe he may be in the Ottawa area."

Hackett is described at six-feet tall, 135 pounds with light-brown skin, short brown hair and brown eyes.

Police are advising the public not to approach Hackett if they spot him, and call police as soon as possible.

"We believe he may be dangerous," Soucy said.

Hackett did not go to the same high school as the victim and is known to police, Soucy said.

The Canada-wide warrant was issued because police have exhausted all avenues in trying to locate Hackett, Soucy said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Ottawa Police Service Major Crime Section at 613-236-1222 ext. 5493, or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477.
