Another shooting in downtown Ottawa means the city has broken its record for the most shootings in a single year, with three months still to go.

The latest shooting took place on the corner of George Street and William Street in the Byward Market neighbourhood, an area full of clubs and pubs, at 3:20 a.m. on Sunday.

The shooting is Ottawa's 50th this year, edging out the previous record of 49 set in 2014. Police say it’s a worrying sign.

"It’s a concern for members of our community, it’s a concern for our organization. We all have to have some level of concern for the number of shootings," said Insp. John Medeiros.

Police say the violence isn't limited to one area; rather it's increasing across the city.

The latest victim, a 27-year-old man who was known to police, is in critical condition but is expected to survive.

It's the second consecutive weekend of gunfire in the city, after a 40-year-old man was killed last Saturday morning and a 26-year-old man was shot the next day. Both of those shootings took place in the city's west end.

The rise in shootings has also come with a rise in murders in the city. There are currently 13 homicides under investigation, while Ottawa only recorded seven murders last year.

Residents who live near the Byward Market say the latest shooting has them feeling worried.

"We usually know that Ottawa is a family city but when you start hearing things like that, like my friend said, you think twice about going out with your kids and wife," said one man who spoke to CTV.
