After a tragic incident by a bonfire claimed part of his hand this summer, 11-year-old Luke Cusson is making the best of it.

The determined Winnipeg boy still spends time gardening and taking apart computers in his spare time. And even though his dominant right hand was the one hurt in the accident, Luke is adapting by switching from playing the clarinet to the trumpet, which only requires one hand, and learning to write with his left hand.

Luke spent 17 days in the hospital and required three surgeries on his arm and hand. Now that he’s back home, he still needs to wrap his hand and forearm in bandages and keep it in a brace.

“Only one finger is there, but I can move it in all directions and I can twist my arm,” Luke told CTV Winnipeg on Monday.

The young boy’s mother, Carol Cusson, said they’re considering plastic surgery for his injured hand, and are also considering prosthetics as another option.

“We just try to take it day by day,” Cusson said. “We know that there will be adaptations in the future for things and we’re finding out as we go along.”
