ST. JOHN'S, N.L. -- A worker from a drilling rig off the coast of Newfoundland is in stable condition after falling into the Atlantic ocean early Saturday.

Statoil Canada says an employee on the Seadrill West Hercules rig went overboard around 2:45 a.m. into waters 500 kilometres from shore.

Spokeswoman Alex Collins says the person was quickly recovered by a vessel in the area and taken back to the rig.

Collins says the worker is in stable condition in a St. John's hospital.

Statoil is investigating the incident and has reported it to the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board.
