Thirty-year-old Cory Beaver died on Christmas Day -- 3,500 kilometres away from his family and friends in Nova Scotia.

Now his ailing mother just wants to bring his body home, and she's asking for help to do that through an online crowdfunding campaign.

A family friend launched the online campaign through GoFundMe in an effort to raise $10,000 to fly Cory Beaver's body home from Alberta to Nova Scotia. The fundraiser has collected almost $8,000 in donations since it launched a week ago.

Organizer Jennifer Markey says all donations are much appreciated, especially because Cory Beaver's mother, Lorna, is struggling to deal with the costs of a recent liver disease diagnosis.

Lorna's son Cory died of health complications on Dec. 25 in Fort McMurray, Alta., some 3,500 kilometres from his family in Halifax.

He had a history of heart issues and received a heart transplant 10 years ago.

Cory Beaver had been living in Fort McMurray with his children, and had plans to return to Nova Scotia with them before his health began to deteriorate in December.

"He was just a really giving, loving, funny kind of guy," cousin Kaylene Jackson told CTV Atlantic on Friday.

Family and friends held a wake for Beaver on Friday. Burial arrangements are set for Monday.
