A missing Chinese university student is being identified as the victim of a grisly murder and dismemberment incident in Montreal.

According to a report Friday in Montreal's La Presse newspaper, citing police sources, the victim is 33-year-old Lin Jun from Wuhan, China.

The website for China's Consulate General in Montreal listed Lin Jun as a missing person and asked anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.

His family last heard from him on May 24.

La Presse reported that Lin Jun was a student at Concordia University in Montreal.

Magnotta believed to be in France

Luka Rocco Magnotta is accused of stabbing and dismembering a victim, posting video of the act on the Internet, then mailing body parts to political offices.

French police announced Friday they are actively searching for Magnotta, and believe he is hiding in the country.

On Friday, a senior French official said he is "sure" Magnotta is currently in France.

Another police official in France said the country's fugitive unit is currently searching for him as it appears as though Magnotta, 29, flew from Montreal to Paris last weekend.

Montreal police said Thursday they found evidence in Magnotta's apartment suggesting he had left North America, including a blog entry written under his name with instructions on how to disappear.

Montreal police have issued a warrant for his arrest and Interpol is also looking for Magnotta.

On Tuesday a severed foot arrived in the mail at the Conservative Party of Canada's headquarters in Ottawa, triggering a police investigation.

Later that day a severed hand was intercepted at a Canada Post office in the capital, apparently destined for the Liberal Party of Canada's offices.

Then police announced a link between the mailed body parts and a human torso found in a suitcase in Montreal, in the garbage behind Magnotta's apartment building.

Magnotta's audition

The news comes one day after video emerged of Magnotta auditioning for a gay-themed reality television show on OutTV five years ago.

In the video of Magnotta's audition for Cover Guy, obtained Thursday by CTV, Magnotta appears at times confident, at times nervous and unsure of himself.

The show, which is no longer on the air, ran on the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender specialty television channel OutTV. Producers were seeking the ultimate male underwear model and, in 2007, Luka Rocco Magnotta thought he had what it took.

"A lot of people tell me I'm really devastatingly good looking," Magnotta tells a panel of show judges as he unbuttons his black shirt, takes it off, and slings it over his shoulder.

Magnotta stands naked from the waist up as he answers questions from the judges, talking to them about how he used to be overweight, until he took up running every morning.

International manhunt

The Interpol warrant issued Thursday morning includes a picture of Magnotta and a description listing his height as five-foot-eight, and his weight as 134 pounds. Magnotta has brown hair and blue eyes, according to the posting, which includes few other details.

Police say they have not identified the victim in the murder investigation but say he bears a resemblance to a man reported missing several days ago.

Officers canvassing the working-class Cote-des-Neiges neighbourhood of Montreal, where the torso was found in a suitcase, have been showing residents an image of an Asian man in his 30s.

Montreal police have said they believe the male victim knew his assailant.
