VANCOUVER -- A two-year-old German shepherd is expected to recover after being found badly injured and left to die in a Vancouver dumpster.

Passersby found the male dog, wrapped in a bloody blanket, in the garbage container in a Kitsilano neighbourhood on Wednesday morning.

B.C. SPCA spokeswoman Lori Chortyk says the dog was conscious but barely responsive when it was rushed to a vet, covered in cuts and bruises on its face, head, neck and shoulders.

She says the injuries appear to have been inflicted no more than a day before the dog was found.

Investigators have already tracked the dog's owner and want to know why the pet was underweight, what caused its serious injuries and how it ended up at the bottom of the dumpster.

But SPCA general manager of cruelty investigations, Marcie Moriarty, says it's too early to know if charges will be laid.
