Funnel clouds were spotted developing over Calgary and the surrounding area on Sunday, but an Environment Canada weather advisory for the city has since been lifted.

The weather agency lifted the Calgary advisory just after 2 p.m. local time. But a special weather statement was still in place for regions southeast of the city, including Newell, Vulcan and Wheatland.

While funnel clouds themselves are not dangerous, the government agency says there is a chance that the rotation of the clouds could intensify into a small landspout tornado.

Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage, but can be dangerous to people, the alert said.

Funnel clouds tend to appear with little or no warning. Residents who see funnel clouds are being asked to prepare to take shelter in the event of a tornado.
