The Ontario SPCA is urging anyone with information concerning the discovery of eight puppies in a garbage bag in Midland, Ont. to come forward.

According to a press release by the Ontario SPCA, a local resident discovered the puppies inside the bag in a ditch on Baseline Road South while they were outside doing yard work on Oct. 14. The charity said they believe the puppies are a Lab-Shepherd mix.

The Ontario SPCA doesn’t know how long the puppies were in the bag for or their age, although they estimated they were between three and five days old at the time of discovery. The umbilical cords were still attached to the puppies when they were found.

The animals were rushed to the Ontario SPCA Midland & District Animal Centre where four of the eight puppies died. The surviving four are currently being cared for by the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre according to the press release. The centre had a nursing dog in its care, allowing the puppies to feed as they recovered.

Alison Green, senior inspector for the Ontario SPCA, has appealed to the public for information about the puppies. She urged anyone who might be able to assist with the investigation to call 1-888-668-7722 immediately.

“There is no excuse when it comes to failing to care for your animals,” Green said in the press release.
