BURNABY, B.C. -- A coroner's inquest in British Columbia is expected to hear more testimony today about the events leading up to the police-shooting death of a man who killed two people and wounded another.
The inquest has already heard 26-year-old Angus Mitchell had a history of mental illness and substance abuse and was arrested in February 2012 under the Mental Health Act after he walked into a Saanich, B.C., clinic with a rifle.
Police seized the rifle, but it was returned to Mitchell even though a Victoria police officer cited concerns about his mental health.
The inquest heard that a month later, Mitchell used the weapon to kill a man and a woman and to seriously injure his former landlord in the Metro Vancouver city of Burnaby.
Police issued a public warning, and hours later they surrounded Mitchell in the Fraser Valley community of Maple Ridge and shot him dead.
The officers involved in the shooting have been cleared of any wrongdoing.
